Week Ahead - May 20th

In the US, investors will be closely monitoring speeches by several Fed officials, the FOMC meeting minutes, and key economic indicators including the S&P Manufacturing and Services PMI, durable goods orders, and new and existing home sales. The earnings season is nearing its end, with reports expected from major corporations such as Palo Alto Networks, Lowe’s, Nvidia, PDD Holdings, TJX Companies, Analog Devices, Synopsys, Target, and Intuit. Globally, attention will be on interest rate decisions in China, New Zealand, South Korea, and Turkey. Inflation rates will be released for Canada, the UK, Japan, and South Africa. Additionally, Manufacturing and Services PMI data will be published for Australia, Japan, India, France, Germany, the Euro Area, and the United Kingdom. Consumer confidence figures will be reported for Australia, the UK, and the Euro Area, along with retail sales data for the UK and Canada and trade balance for the Euro Area and Japan.

It will be relatively calm week in the United States, with market focus on the release of the FOMC minutes and various appearances by Fed officials. Traders will be closely watching for signs of when the Fed may begin cutting interest rates, at a time economic data is pointing to some cooling in the economy, although price pressures persist and comments from several officials indicate higher-for-longer borrowing costs. On the data front, it will also be interesting to follow S&P Global PMIs, durable goods orders, and the final readings for the Michigan consumer sentiment. Durable goods orders are expected to grow for the 3rd month but a at a slower pace. Also, investors will closely monitor existing and new home sales, that are expected to decline. Finally, the earnings season continues with Palo Ato Networks, Lowe’s, Nvidia, PDD holding, TJX companies, Analof Devices, Synopsis, Target and Intuit among the biggest companies to report. Elsewhere in America, there will be updates on inflation and retail sales for Canada, while Mexico will release final GDP growth figures and mid-month inflation. Chile will announce an interest rate decision and GDP growth numbers, adding to the market buzz in the region.

In the United Kingdom, the economic calendar is full of key indicators such as inflation, retail sales, public sector net borrowing, Gfk consumer confidence, and CBI factory orders. Annual inflation likely slowed to 2.1% in April, the lowest since June 2021 and near the Bank of England's target of 2%. Core inflation is expected to decrease to 3.7%, the lowest since October 2021. Retail sales are anticipated to drop for the first time in four months. Also, flash PMI surveys are likely to show continued growth in the service sector and a lesser contraction in manufacturing. Elsewhere in Europe, flash PMI data will be released for the Euro Area, Germany, and France, with the service sector expanding faster and manufacturing contracting less. Additionally, Euro Area consumer confidence is expected to improve to the highest level since February 2022. Germany is expected to see an increase in producer prices for the second consecutive month in April, albeit at a slower pace. Other important data to watch include the Euro Area's balance of trade and negotiated wages, Germany's final Q1 GDP data, and Turkey's interest rate decision.

Investors will remain on high alert throughout the week for potential details around China’s plans to purchase unsold homes and rescue its crisis-ridden property market, among its boldest measures to stimulate the economy yet, as funding pledged by the PBoC translates to a small fraction of China’s housing inventory estimates. The Chinese central bank is set to hold its loan prime rates unchanged on Monday as the need for yuan support weighed against Beijing’s target for higher loan demand. In Japan, April’s CPI print is expected to show further softening in underlying inflation, while April’s trade deficit should narrow and March’s machinery orders are set to decline. Markets also await May PMI figures and the Reuters Tankan index. PMI data is also awaited in India. As in China, central banks in South Korea and Indonesia are also expected to hold rates unchanged. Elsewhere, Thailand will release its first-quarter GDP and Malaysia will unveil April’s CPI. In Australia, investors will be treated to a batch of forward-looking indicators, including May’s Westpac consumer sentiment index and PMI prints, while the RBA will release minutes from its last meeting.
