Eurozone Construction Output Rises Less than Expected
Construction output in the Euro Area rose 0.3 percent from a year earlier in October 2019, after a downwardly revised 0.3 percent decline in the previous month but missing market expectations of a 2.4 percent gain. Building activity increased 0.2 percent, rebounding from a 0.6 percent fall in September while civil engineering works went up 1.1 percent, the same pace as in the prior month. Among Eurozone's largest economies, output shrank less in France (-1.2 percent vs -1.7 percent) and Spain (-0.3 percent vs -10.2 percent) while construction growth slowed in Germany (0.3 percent vs 1.8 percent).

Construction output in the Euro Area dropped 0.7 percent from a year earlier in September 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.8 percent growth in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 2.7 percent expansion. This was the first month of contraction in construction output since January 2017, led by a decline in building activity (-1.0 percent vs 0.7 percent) while civil engineering works continued to increase (1.1 percent vs 1.7 percent). This is the weakest pace of growth in construction activity since January, as building activity advanced less (1.6 percent vs 1.8 percent in July) while civil engineering works rose at the same pace (at 0.9 percent). Among Eurozone's largest economies, growth slowed in Germany (1.4 percent vs 2.4 percent) and Spain (2.7 percent vs 3.8 percent) while France's output continued to fall (-0.9 percent, the same pace as in July).

Among Eurozone's largest economies, France's output fell sharply (-2.5 percent vs 2.0 percent), while growth was seen in Germany (1.9 percent vs 2.0 percent) and Spain (2.7 percent vs 0.9 percent).

Output rose at a softer pace for both building activity (2 percent vs 2.7 percent) and civil engineering works (2.3 percent vs 3.5 percent). Among Eurozone's largest economies, Germany's output growth slowed sharply (0.1 percent vs 5.5 percent) and Spain's activity was unchanged (vs 2.2 percent in April) while France's construction output rebounded 4 percent (vs -2.2 percent in April). On a monthly basis, construction output fell 0.3 percent in May, the third consecutive month of contraction.
