New Zealand Producer Prices Rise Above Consensus
Producer input prices in New Zealand increased 0.9 percent on quarter in the third quarter of 2019, following a 0.3 percent climb in the previous period and compared to market expectations of a 0.5 percent increase. Cost for agriculture prices jumped 1.0 percent after remaining flat in Q2, while prices for utilities rebounded 2.0 percent after declining 9.2 percent in the previous period. In contrast, inflation for mining declined to 0.6 percent (from 0.8 percent), while prices for information media & telecommunications fell 0.8 percent (vs +2.8 percent). Meanwhile, inflation remained unchanged for manufacturing (at 1.6 percent) and construction (at 0.8 percent). Output prices increased 1.0 percent, up from 0.5 percent in the previous period and more than an expected 0.3 percent climb. Year-on-year, input prices rose 2.1 percent (vs 2.4 percent in Q2) and output prices went up 1.8 percent (vs 2.2 percent in Q2).

New Zealand Producer Input Prices Rebound in Q2
Producer input prices in New Zealand increased 0.3 percent on quarter in the second quarter of 2019, following a 0.9 percent decline in the previous period and against market expectations of a 0.6 percent fall. Cost was flat for agriculture, forestry & fishing (vs 0.1% in Q1) while rebounded for mining (0.8% vs -1.2%); manufacturing (1.6% vs -1.8%),of which petroleum & coal products (11.9% vs -15.6%); construction (0.8% vs -0.1%) and transport, postal & warehousing (0.1% vs -1.2%). At the same time, input prices rose much faster for information & telecommunications (2.8% vs 0.7%) and decreased less for utilities (-8.2% vs -9.8%). Output prices increased 0.5 percent, the same pace as in the previous period and more than an expected 0.4 percent drop. Year-on-year, input prices rose 2.4 percent (vs 3.1 percent in Q1) and output prices went up 2.2 percent (vs 2.6 percent in Q1).

New Zealand Producer Input Prices Fall in Q1
Producer input prices in New Zealand declined 0.9 percent on quarter in the first quarter of 2019, following a 1.6 percent rise in the previous period and well below market expectations of a 1.6 percent increase. It was the first fall in producer input prices since the first quarter of 2016, as cost dropped for utilities (-9.8 percent from 19.9 percent in Q4 2018), namely electricity & gas supply (-11.5 percent); manufacturing (-1.8 percent from 0.2 percent), of which petroleum & coal products (-15.6 percent); mining (-1.2 percent from 2.3 percent); agriculture, forestry & fishing (-0.1 percent from 1.3 percent); construction (-0.1 percent from 0.7 percent); and transport, postal & warehousing (-1.2 percent from 0.9 percent). Also, prices eased for information & telecommunications (0.7 percent from 1.2 percent); and financial & insurance services (0.6 percent from 1.1 percent). Output prices went down 0.5 percent, after a downwardly revised 0.7 percent increase in the prior period.

New Zealand Producer Input Prices at Over 3-Year High
Producer input prices in New Zealand increased 1.6 percent on quarter in the fourth quarter of 2018, following a 1.4 percent rise in the previous period and above market expectations of 1.1 percent. It is the biggest gain in input prices since the third quarter of 2015, as prices went up further for electricity, gas, water and waste services (19.9 percent from 3.2 percent in Q3), namely electricity and gas supply (23.2 percent from 3.2 percent) and mining (2.3 percent from 2.2 percent). Also, cost of financial and insurance services rebounded (1.1 percent from -0.7 percent), of which insurance and superannuation funds (1.9 percent from -2.7 percent). Year-on-year, input prices advanced 4.7 percent, after rising 4.0 percent in the prior period.
