Senegal GDP Expands the Least in a Year
The economy of Senegal grew 5.5% from a year ago in the second quarter of 2019, down from 5.7% in the previous period. It was the weakest growth since Q2 2018, as secondary activity rose much less (1.9% vs 5.3% in Q1), dragged by chemical products (-4.2% vs 2.4%); agro-food (7.2 percent vs 8.8 percent) and electricity and gas supply (6.4% vs 10.6%). In contrast, the construction sector rebounded sharply (12.2% vs -4.6%). Primary activities also posted smaller gains (7.7% vs 9.3%), namely agriculture (6.6% vs 9.9%). In contrast, services expanded faster (6.5% vs 4.9%), in particular internal trade (5% vs 4.2%); information & communication (6% vs 3.4%); finance & insurance (7% vs 3.4%); real estate activities (8.3% vs 3.8%); business services (7.8% vs 3.7%) and public administration (8% vs 7.9%). On a quarterly basis, the GDP rose 0.2 percent compared to 0.4 percent in the previous quarter.

Senegal GDP Annual Growth Slows to 5.7% in Q1
The economy of Senegal expanded 5.7% from a year earlier in the first quarter of 2019, following a 6.8% advance in the previous period. Slower growth was seen in services (4.9% vs 6.3% in Q4), namely business services (5.7% vs 8.1%); real estate activities (3.8% vs 7.9%); information & communication (3.4% vs 6.2%); transport (4.3% vs 6.1%) and wholesale & retail trade (4.2% vs 5.5%). In contrast, stronger gains were posted in public administration (7.9% vs 7.8%); finance & insurance (3.4% vs 2.9%) and hotels & restaurants (5.6% vs 4.6%). Also, secondary activity lost some steam (5.3% vs 6.5%), mainly led by construction (-4.6% vs 9.7%) and manufacture of cement & building materials (2.1% vs 5.4%). Mining, however, rose strongly (10.3% vs 4.9%). The primary activity also grew solidly (9.3% vs 8.7%), namely agriculture (9.9% vs 10.1%) and fishing (15.4% vs 11.9%). On a quarterly basis, the GDP advanced 0.4%, slowing from 1.7% in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Senegal GDP Annual Growth at 1-Year High of 6.8%
The economy of Senegal expanded 6.8 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, quickening from a 3.9 percent advance in the previous period. It is the fastest expansion in a year, as output rose faster in services (6.3 percent vs 5.8 percent in Q3), mostly business services (8.1 percent vs 7.2 percent); real estate activities (7.9 percent vs 5 percent) and public administration (7.8 percent vs 7.5 percent). Meantime, secondary activity rose further (6.5 percent vs 6.4 percent), particularly construction (9.7 percent vs 6.8 percent) and food production (8.9 percent vs 8.2 percent). The primary activity also increased faster (8.7 percent vs 7.8 percent), namely agriculture (10.1 percent vs 10.2 percent); fishing (11.9 percent vs -3.9 percent) and forestry & lodging (9 percent vs 8 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP advanced 1.7 percent. In 2018, the economy grew 6.8 percent.
