Taiwan Unemployment Rate at 3.71 percent


Taiwan seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was barely unchanged at 3.71 percent in February of 2019 from 3.72 percent in January. The number of unemployed persons went up by 9 thousand from the prior month to 443 thousand and employment rose by 7 thousand to 11.473 million. Meantime, the labor force participation edged up to 59.07 percent in February from 59.09 in January.

Taiwan Interest Rate at 1.38 percent


The central bank of Taiwan left its key policy rate unchanged at 1.375 percent on March 21st 2019, matching market expectations, saying Taiwan's economy would likely expand at a somewhat slower pace this year due to lower global growth and persistent uncertainties over the international economic, trade, and financial prospects. In addition, the actual output remains below potential and inflationary pressures are expected to be subdued. Policymakers forecast Taiwan's GDP growth to be 2.13 percent in 2019, lower than the previous year. Inflation and core inflation for 2019 are seen at 0.91% and 0.78%, respectively.

Taiwan Export Orders at 28902.00 USD Million


Export orders from Taiwan declined 10.9 percent year-on-year in February of 2019, following a 6 percent drop in January and worse than market expectations of a 5.25 percent decline. It is the biggest annual drop in export orders since April of 2016. Orders fell mostly for information and communication products (-11.1 percent) and electronics (-8.1 percent). Among major trading partners, demand fell from the US (-5.5 percent), China (-14.3 percent) and Europe (-18.8 percent) but edged up from Japan (0.3 percent). Export orders tend to be volatile in the first two months of the year due to the Lunar New Year holidays. Yet, export orders went down 8.1 percent in January-February 2019 compared to the same period a year earlier.
