Tanzania Inflation Rate Slows in October

Consumer prices in Tanzania increased 5.1 percent year-on-year in October of 2017, easing from a 5.3 percent rise in September, mainly due to a slowdown in commodity prices.

Year-on-year, inflation slowed for food and non-alcoholic beverages (8.8 percent compared to 9.3 percent in September); clothing and footwear (3.4 percent vs 3.8 percent); housing and utilities (7.6 percent compared to 8.8 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house (2.8 percent compared to 8.8 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (3 percent compared to 3.4 percent). Meantime, prices fell for communication (-0.9 percent compared to -1 percent) and remained steady for clothing and footwear (3.4 percent); recreation and culture (1.9 percent) and education (0.8 percent). On the other hand, prices advanced at a faster pace for health (2.1 percent compared to 1.9 percent) and rebounded for transport (0.2 percent compared to -0.3 percent) and restaurants and hotels (0.6 percent compared to -0.3 percent).

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy was steady at 1.7 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices decreased 0.1 percent after a 0.02 percent rise in September. Prices for food went down 0.3 percent, mainly dragged down by cost of sorghum grain (9.3 percent); round potatoes (6.9 percent); sorghum flour (5.5 percent); cooking bananas (4.2 percent); cassava flour (2.2 percent); vegetables (1.7 percent) and fish (1.4 percent).
